IWC
International Watch Company, better known as IWC or IWC Schaffhausen, is a Swiss watch manufacturing company. The companys history began as early as 1868, when an American Florentine Ariosto Jones decided to start a watch factory. Schaffhausen was chosen because of the nearby hydro power plant, that had been build a few years earlier. Because of the plant, several industries were able to establish themselves in the area. IWC is the first, and the only, watch manufacturer in the North-Eastern Switzerland. In 1936, IWC started to manufacture watches especially for aviation, and the first aviation collection was called Mark IX. A few decades later, IWC started a collaboration with the car manufacturer Porsche. In 1978, they developed and marketed a worlds first watch with build-in compass. Over the past years, IWC has been in partnership with Mercedes. In 1991, the IWC's director Günter Blümlein founded the LMH Group with head offices in Schaffhausen. LMH owns 100 percent of IWC, 60 percent of Jaeger LeCoultre and 90 percent of the German watch manufacturer A Lange & Söhne. LMH Group has more than 1440 employees in total. In July of 2000, the LMH was bought by Richemont. The take-over guaranteed an independence and continuity for all the LMH Groups labels. The purchase also ensured that the Swiss labels IWC and Jaeger LeCoultre continued in Swiss ownership.
