Breitling is one of the most famous Swiss watch manufacturers. Breitlings origins are in the Swiss canton of Jura. Breitling produces watches and clockworks that are specifically designed for aviation and aviators. However, they are mostly used by women and men who appreciate high-end luxury watches. Breitling manufactures certified chronometers and most of their watches offer aviation functions. Due to their chronographs and chronometer functions, the watches have become more status symbols than practical tools. The typical watch from Breitling has a dial that is quite large in diameter. This facilitates visibility and it gives more space for the information required on the analogue dials. Many of Breitling watches feature an automatic winding mechanism, which is purely mechanical. Several Breitling models are equipped with additional features such as the fly-back and the split-second function, a lunar phase and a date display and other complications. All Breitling watches are manufactured in Switzerland and they are made of domestic components. Raw movements are provided by ETA SA (Manufacture Horlogère Suisse) and Valjoux and they are modified by Breitling before controlling and certification by the COSC (Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres). Quartz models, such as Breitling Aeromarine Colt, are a bit less expensive than mechanical watches like the Breitling for Bentley Motors model. The expense is clearly in the 38 jewel self-winding movement. Besides being less expensive to produce, the advantage of quartz watches is that they keep time even when not in use. This is possible because of a self-winding rotor mechanism that generates electricity with a piezoelectric quartz crystal as its timing element. The advantage of the mechanical watches is that they remain unaffected even when surrounded by strong magnetic fields. Mechanical watches also have a much higher resistance to cold than quartz watches. The Breitling Emergency model contains a radio transmitter for civilian aviation uses, which broadcasts at 121.5 MHz. This signal can be picked up as far away as 90 nautical miles and has been proven to have saved lives. Emergency models can be purchased by people who do not have a pilots licence, but they are required to sign an agreement that stipulates that the person who triggers any rescue operation with his watch is responsible of the whole cost of the operation. Breitling watches are very popular among celebrities, and the company uses many of them as ambassadors for their label. Among these ambassadors are Mel Gibson, Bruce Willis, Roger Moore, John Travolta and Jerry Seinfeld.
